Be it an essay or a research paper, either cannot begin without an introduction. A thesis statement forms a part of this introduction that explains what the reader is about to read in the rest of the paper, in a very concise yet specific manner. In a line or two, a thesis statement provides the conclusion you have reached about the particular topic you have discussed in the paper. Such a statement usually occurs towards the end of the introductory paragraph. In some cases, a thesis statement may declare several points and may be written in a paragraph. Here, we discuss how to write a thesis statement that is clear, crisp, and precise.
Writing a Thesis Statement
A good thesis statement creates an impact and has the reader looking forward to reading the entire document that is your essay or research paper. A thesis statement consists of thorough evidence to support the research you have presented in the paper. There are certain guidelines that should be followed in order to write a good thesis statement.
- The first step is deciding on the topic of your thesis and learning all about it. For instance, if your research paper is about ?The Effect of the Harry Potter Series on Young Minds?, you have to ensure that you have read all the books, preferably watched the movies, and are prepared to conduct thorough research on the subject.
- While the Harry Potter series may have had different effects on different minds, what your job is to do in order to write a thesis statement is to focus on one specific effect based on your research. Focusing on one aspect will help you narrow down to the kind of thesis statement you wish to write. For instance, you may focus on how Harry Potter has inspired creativity in young minds, or the psychological effects of the world of wizardry and witchcraft on them.
- When you research, you will find that your essay follows a specific pattern. While you work on this pattern your thesis will derive a purpose. It is this purpose that will help you draft your thesis statement. This is why it is always suggested that a thesis statement be written after you have written the entire paper. This is necessary because the pattern of your paper may change as you continue writing it. It is only after you complete the paper and read it that you will be able to write a specific and appropriate thesis statement. For instance, while you may have decided to write about how Harry Potter has inspired creativity in young minds, in the process of writing, you may narrow down your research to the representation of this creativity in the way youngsters dress, write, speak, or represent their artwork.
- The thesis statement will reiterate itself in the conclusion of your paper. As such, you may derive the thesis statement from this conclusion, and then write it. Based on the format of your essay or research paper, the thesis will provide an overview of what is to be expected in it, and will preferably be as narrow as possible.
Finally, your thesis statement may appear like this: This research paper focuses on how the Harry Potter series has inspired creativity in young minds, which is reflected in the content of their creative writing exercises. This research intends to prove how the Harry Potter series is bringing about a slow but steady revolution in the literary world in terms of content and expression.
Content of a Thesis Statement
Finally, your thesis statement should fulfill the following requirements:
- The thesis statement should make the reader ask questions such as ?how? or ?why?. If your thesis statement leads the reader to say ?so what?, there are chances you may have to rewrite it. Try analyzing your thesis statement based on these points.
- The transition from the thesis statement to the content of the research paper or essay should be fluid. Also, the it should justify the discussion that follows in the paper.
- It should not be broad but narrow, in that it should pinpoint the exact area of study within the paper.
- The thesis statement cannot be neutral. For instance, in the aforementioned example, you are explicitly stating your findings from your research, which have led to your belief that Harry Potter indeed has changed the way youngsters write and express themselves. Not everyone may agree with your findings.
- A thesis statement may be analytical, expository or explanatory, or argumentative.
Once you draft your thesis statement and complete your paper, it is a good idea to run it by your guide or instructor, who will help you analyze whether the it does justice to the rest of the paper.
